Emergency Meeting To Determine If Reliance Keeps Fire Protection

A special meeting will take place tonight between Sweetwater County Fire District # 1 Board of Directors and the Reliance Fire District Board to discuss an agreement between the two districts.

The special meeting takes place at 6 p.m. tonight at the Sweetwater County Fire District #1 Station, located at 3010 College Drive in Rock Springs.

Currently, Reliance is under fire protection from Sweetwater County Fire District #1 per an agreement between the two boards, but that agreement expires at the end of February.

If an agreement cannot be reached, there is the possibility that Reliance would not have any fire protection.

“There’s a very good possibility that tomorrow night at midnight, if an agreement can’t be reached, they’ll be without fire protection,” said SWCFD#1 Chief Scott Kitchner.

Under the current agreement, the Reliance Fire Board pays SWCFD#1 for the fire protection. However, Kitchner says the funds paid have not been enough to cover the cost of fire suppression for the growing community. Over the past three years, the District has lost about $37,000 fighting fires in Reliance.

“We’re not asking to make money off of them, we’re just looking to break even,” said Kitchner.

Tonight’s meeting is open to the public.
