Tonight, January 21, 2022, they will showcase their game-day and coed traditional routines at the high school. This is a fundraiser to help pay for their trip to Orlando, Florida, February 11-13, to compete in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships.

The National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) is largest and most prestigious high school cheerleading championship in the country.

Next week, January 28, they will compete in the 2022 State Spirit Competition. The team recently won the UCA Salt Lake City regionals.

“We won because we were cleaner than our competition, and we put more detail into the little things that people sometimes overlook,” said Darika Meeks, one of the team captains. A senior, this is Meeks’ fourth year cheerleading. “I think we’re going to do the same at state — go in and focus on every little detail,” she said.

Their coach, Allison Luna, is extremely proud of the team.

“The kids are so hardworking and these are the coolest routines that ever came out of Wyoming,” said Luna. “I’m nervous and excited to be trying the things we are doing.” Luna, once a Green River High School cheerleader, is in her fourth year coaching.

One of the boys on the team, Broox Riley, said that cheering is one of the funnest things he has ever done.

“It teaches you a lot about caring for other people and trusting your teammates, and that’s something a lot of sports don’t offer,” said Riley.

Riley’s friend, Branson Barton, also in his second year cheering, expressed gratitude for being a part of the team.

“My first practice was great, and I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do it,” said Barton.

Tonight’s showcasing fundraiser starts at 7:00 in the Green River High School main gym. Tickets are $5.
