Change of Plans: First Arrival in RS for UP’s No. 844 and 4014 Trains May 5

(April 27, 2019) — According to the Union Pacific, Big Boy No. 4014, the 4-8-8-4 will lead 4-8-4 No. 844, and traveling together starting on Saturday, May 4, 2019.

Originally, No. 844 was supposed to make an appearance in Rock Springs on Saturday, April 27, with the No. 4014 train arriving on May 5.  According to Trains.com, “The Union Pacific Steam Team is busy making final preparations for the May 4 christening of the Big Boy No. 4014 in Cheyenne, Wyoming,” and, “Final touches on its paint job are being applied and the last necessary tests are being conducted.”

The trains will be traveling for the trip to Ogden, Utah, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad.

Here is the new itinerary from the Rock Springs Main Street/URA Facebook page for the trains’ stop in Rock Springs, WY:

Both engines will arrive in Rock Springs, Sunday, May 5 by 11:15 am and will leave Rock Springs by 4 am on May 6.

The No. 844 and No. 4014, along with the traveling museum, will arrive in Rock Springs, May 13 at 12:45 pm. They will be on display in Rock Springs, May 14-May 15, 9 am to 3 pm. They leave Rock Springs on May 16 by 8 am. This is the only stop for the museum in Wyoming!
