February 9, 2022 — The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team got victory number 20 last night with a 78-76 overtime win at home against Utah State. But as has been the routine this season, the win didn’t come easy.
In overtime, Graham Ike scored on a rebound of a missed shot with just over six seconds remaining, proving to be the game-winner. Utah State missed a layup at the buzzer of the overtime period. The Cowboys are 3-0 in overtime games this season.
“To see what our team did the second half against one of the best offensive teams in the country (Utah State), holding them to 40 percent shooting, I’m very proud of our guys,” Wyoming Head Coach Jeff Linder said. “The crowd played a big, big factor again in this win. This is a special team, a special team.”
Wyoming is now tied with Boise State for the Mountain West lead with a 9-1 record. The Pokes are 20-3 overall and have now won five straight games. It is the 24th season Cowboy basketball has won 20 games or more.
UW trailed by 10-points early in the second half before rallying back. Ike hit two free throws with 16 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. It was the largest comeback for the Pokes this season.
Ike led the Cowboys with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Hunter Maldonado added 23 points along with five assists. Drake Jefferies also added a double-double for the game with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Cowboys now hit the road traveling to San Jose State (0-10 in the MW/7-15 overall) this Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcast on Wyo-Radio’s 99.7 JACK-FM and 99KSIT.com, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
