January 26, 2022 — The Wyoming Cowboys saw their six-game winning streak snapped last night, as Boise State scored a 65-62 win in Boise. The Cowboys trailed by double-digits twice in the second half but battled back to take the lead, 60-58, with 2:46 to play, but late trips to the free-throw line by Boise State resulted in a Bronco win.
The win boosted Boise State to 7-0 in the Mountain West and 16-4 on the year. The Broncos have now won 13 straight games. Wyoming drops to 4-1 in conference and 15-3 on the season.
“That was two really good teams in a tough road environment.” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “For us to be down ten and respond shows character. We had some empty trips down the floor that cost us. We played good enough to win, but sometimes it’s making plays, and we didn’t. We have to put this behind us and get ready for a tough test at Air Force (Friday night)”.
Forward Graham Ike’s 19 points led Wyoming. He also added nine rebounds. Hunter Maldonado added 17 points along with four assists and four rebounds. Drake Jeffries had 12 points.
Boise State led 30-24 at the first-half break and started the second half with a 5-0 run to take a 35-24 lead. The Pokes responded with a 14-2 run over five minutes to take a 38-37 lead with 13:45 left. They would increase the lead to 42-39 at the 11:07 mark, Wyoming’s largest lead of the contest. But the Broncos responded with an 8-0 run to take a 47-42 lead with under 10 minutes remaining.
Boise State would add another run to make it a 54-44 game with 6:47 left. A Jeffries three-pointer, free throws by Jeffries and Maldonado, and an and-one from Maldonado made it a 56-54 game for BSU with 3:51 remaining.
Jeffries added the four-point play to give Wyoming a 60-58 lead with 2:46 left. But Bosie State would hit a jump shot as well as five three throws to gain the win.
The Cowboys return to action on Friday, heading to Air Force (3-4 in the MW/10-8 overall) to take on the Falcons. Game time is 4 p.m. on WyoRadio’s 99.7 JACK-FM and 99KSIT.com.
