LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (Nov. 25, 2019) – Despite holding the #23 rated Colorado Buffaloes to just 15-points in the first half, Wyoming could not overcome a slow second-half start in losing, 56-41, on Sunday evening. The game was part of the MGM Main Event in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Wyoming drops to 3-4 on the season while Colorado improves to 4-0.
“I thought it was a really good first half,” UW head coach Allen Edwards said. “We talked about the battle of the defenses. I thought in the second half they were a little more aggressive and we struggled on the boards. We didn’t do a job of taking care of the basketball.”
The game was tied at 15-15 at half, but Colorado would outscore the Pokes 13-0 in the first four minutes of second-half play to take a 28-15 lead. The Cowboys would battle back and cut the Buff’s lead to just four-points, 36-32, with just over 10-minutes to play. The Colorado lead would stand between four and six points for the next few minutes of play. Then the Buffaloes would start to expand the lead around the seven minute mark, reaching 14 points, 50-36, with 4:56 to play.
Wyoming was led in scoring by redshirt sophomore Hunter Maldonado with 14 points. He also added three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Greg Milton added a career-high seven points. Senior Jake Hendricks and sophomore Trevon “TJ” Taylor added six points with sophomore Hunter Thompson adding a team best six rebounds.
National Player of the Year Candidate Tyler Bey led the Buffs with 11 points and 19 rebounds. D’Shawn Schwartz added 12 points.
Wyoming returns to action on Tuesday evening playing TCU (4-1), who lost to Clemson (5-1), 62-60, in the other MGM Main Event matchup.
