Cowboys score rare win at Fresno State

February 7, 2022 — The Wyoming Cowboy defense and play on the glass lifted the Pokes to a 61-59 road win over Fresno State on Sunday. Wyoming outrebounded the Bulldogs 46 to 28 in gaining just their fifth win ever at Fresno State.

The win puts the Pokes at 8-1 in the Mountain West Conference and 19-3 overall. UW trails Boise state (9-1 in conference/18-5 overall) by just 1/2 game in the standings. The 8-1 start equals the Cowboy’s best start in the MW since the 2001-02 season. Fresno State falls to 6-4 in conference and 16-7 overall.

“We knew what kind of effort and toughness was needed,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “Fresno State on the road is a quad one win, and we had to meet their toughness. We are going to have a time and place for others to step up, and they did tonight.”
 
Hunter Maldonado led Wyoming with 21 points on the night. He also added eight rebounds and six assists. Graham Ike added 14 points and eight rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for UW was Brendan Wenzel with 12 points.

Wyoming led 28-24 after the first half of play. The would increase that lead to 40-32 with 12:19 to play on a Hunter Thompson three-point basket, his second of the game. The Bulldogs would cut the lead to 42-40 with 8:30 to go.
 
Maldonado would grab an offensive rebound and add a bucket to push the lead to seven points at 49-42. He would later put the lead back to seven on a pass to Ike for a 51-44 game with 3:57 remaining. Ike would then push the lead to nine points at 53-44 with 3:19 left. But Fresno State was not done.
 
The Bulldog’s Isaiah Hill made it a four-point game with a three-pointer, making it a 53-49 game with 1:52 remaining. After Maldonado added a pair of free throws, Hill hit another three-pointer for a 55-52 game with 1:08 left.

Maldonado added a pair of free throws, but Fresno State hit three of their own and made it a 57-55 game for the Pokes with 23 seconds remaining. Wenzel and Jeffries add free throws to make it a 59-55 game, but Hill rushed to the basket and added a bucket for a 59-57 game with six seconds left. Hill ended the night with 25 points, 14 more than his season average.
 
Drake Jeffries added a pair of free throws for the Pokes with 4.9 seconds left for a 61-57 game, and a late second shot by Fresno State made it a 61-59 game for the Pokes.

The Cowboys will get little rest as they return to Laramie to battle Utah State (6-5 in the MW, 15-9 overall) on Tuesday night. The game will be broadcast on WyoRadio’s 99.7 JACK-FM and streamed at 99KSIT.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
