Cowgirl Basketball Begins Road Swing against Bulldogs


LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 1, 2018) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team will begin a first of a two-game road swing on Saturday against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The game is set for a 3 p.m. MT tip time at the Save Mart Center in Fresno. UW will close out on the road Wednesday against Utah State in Logan.

The Cowgirls enter the contest 14-6 overall and a 7-2 conference record after a tough 64-53 loss against Colorado State on Wednesday night. Senior Liv Roberts finished her night with a team-high 18 points, plus four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The Missoula, Mont., native also reached 1,000 points for her career becoming the 24th player in school history to achieve that mark. Sophomore Taylor Rusk followed with ten points while senior Natalie Baker and junior Clara Tapia each added eight points. Tapia finished the night with a team-high five rebounds. As a team, the Cowgirls shot 17-of-47 (.362) from the field and 6-of-20 (.300) from beyond the arc.


Roberts is averaging a team-high 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest, which ranks 11th and 13th in overall games, respectively in the MW. She is followed by Rusk who is adding 9.2 points and 3.0 assists, while Cotton is chipping in 8.8 points and 5.8 boards per game. UW is shooting 415-of-1022 (.406) from the field and 236-302 (.781) from the free throw line. The Cowgirls are also outscoring its opponents 60.2-55.2 and outrebounding teams 33.4-32.5.

Fresno State enters the contest with a 12-10 overall record and 7-4 in MW action. Last time out, they earned a 13-point win, 68-55, over Nevada. Junior Candice White leads the way with a team-high 17.1 points and 6.5 rebounds. Freshmen Aly Gamez and Maddi Utti are each adding 9.3 points, while Utti is chipping in 5.5 boards. As a squad, the Bulldogs are shooting 39.8 percent (510-1280) from the field and averaging 65.1 points per contest. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 18-15 overall and 8-10 in the league.

This will be the 30th meeting between the two schools. Fresno State leads the series 18-11. The last time the two teams met was March 7, 2017, in the first round of the MW tournament. The Bulldogs came away with a 58-48 victory. Fresno State is coached by Jaime White who is in her fourth season with the program.
