February 10, 2022 — The Wyoming Cowgirls held San Jose State to just 29 points the final three quarters of the game Wednesday night in securing a 75-54 home win. The win pushed the Cowgirls to 6-5 in Mountain West play and evened their season record at 10-10. The Cowgirls currently sit in fourth place in the standings behind UNLV (11-1), New Mexico (11-20), and Nevada 7-4). San Jose State fell to 1-10 in the MW and 4-18 overall.

Quinn Weidemann led all UW scorers with 18 points, despite playing just seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. McKinley Bradshaw and Alba Sanchez Ramos finished the game in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Tommi Olson finished the game with a great all-around effort with eight points, seven rebounds, a season-high seven assists, and two steals.

San Jose led after the first, high-scoring, quarter 25-23, with Wyoming leading only 35-31 at the half. From that point on, it was all Wyoming, outscoring the Spartans 40 to 23 in the second half.

“I don’t understand what happened defensively in the first quarter,” Wyoming Head Coach Geral Mattinson said. “I guess we weren’t ready, and they hit some shots we weren’t expecting, but from the end of the first quarter and beyond, the message was ‘we’re not giving up threes, we’re going to get out there and contest and give up contested two-pointers.” Mattinson added, “We held them to six points in the second quarter, which I think was a big turnaround.”

The Cowgirls returns to the road this weekend as it travels to face Fresno State on Sunday at 3 p.m. That game will be broadcast on WyoRadio’s 1360/103.5 KRKK and 1360KRKK.com.
