GREEN RIVER, WYOMING (July 17, 2021) —  The Green River Fire Department is hosting a Modular Emergency Response Radiological Transportation Training (MERRTT) this Saturday and Sunday.

The 15-hour training program is designed to take the complex topic of a radiological accident response and break it down into 15 easily understood modules and hands-on practical exercises.

The course includes use of “live” radiation sources in the practical exercise to reinforce learning. Upon successful completion of the MERRTT course, students will receive a certificate from the Department of Energy’s Transportation Emergency Preparedness Program.

Assistant Green River Fire Chief Larry Erdmann said Green River is pleased to host this event and it’s a great opportunity for local emergency responders to be trained on an event that could happen in Southwest Wyoming.  Erdmann said, “with the interstate and the railroad being major hubs in the Green River Corridor it is important to know how to respond to potential radioactive incidents that may occur in our jurisdiction.”

This will be a two-day course and there will be representation from the Green River Fire Department, Castle Rock Ambulance, and the Wyoming Highway Department.
