Green River residents Edgar Pena Cota, 39, and Maribel Escalante, 40, were arrested on Wednesday, July 21, for aggravated cruelty to animals, training them to fight.

On Friday, July 23, Wyo4News learned that the animals that were being trained were roosters.

According to GRPD public information officer Jamie Green, investigators began looking into the case back in April after there were complaints of roosters crowing throughout the day and night, which was causing a nuisance for neighbors nearby.

Green said that Cota told investigators that he was raising the roosters and selling them, but never mentioned to whom or to where. He was raising about 30 roosters, in addition to some hens.

The case is still open and no further information is available at this time.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
