Sweetwater County, Wyoming — One of the YWCA Sweetwater County’s biggest fundraisers, “Bowls of Caring,” has started and will continue until April 9. It is time to gather friends, coworkers and family, and have a painting party.

“Bowls of Caring” started out in 2004 as “Bowls of Sharing,” in memory of a local potter, Kathy Crabtree, who passed away that year due to complications from Cushing’s Syndrome.

The YWCA staff will bring ceramics, paint, stencils, paint brushes, and sponges to any “Bowls of Caring” painting party. Groups have the options to paint cereal bowls, large cups, and spoon rests, (which can also be used as jewelry or candy dishes). The price per painted item is $15.

After the party, the YWCA staff will then pick up the painted items and bring them back to the YWCA for firing in their kiln. Participants then pick up their shiny ceramics and bring them home. They are dishwasher and microwave safe.

“I have one from every year since we have taken over, and I haven’t had one break,” said Kayla Mannikko, Development Director of YWCA Sweetwater County. “My kids even drop them. They are very durable.”

For those who do not want to host a party, there are open parties where individuals may participate. The next open party will take place at Coal Train Coffee Depot in Rock Springs on February 5. Preregistering for open parties at Coal Train Coffee Depot are recommended, as space is limited.

Some groups host wine-and-cheese parties, and paint with their friends. Some others do footprints or handprints of their babies or small children. Still others host painting parties during the Super Bowl.

“Every year, my family has a big dinner party, and all the kids paint,” said Mannikko.

All proceeds from “Bowls of Caring” will go toward YWCA’s services, such as child care, free financial education classes, help for victims of violence and sexual abuse, human trafficking, and elder abuse.

Along with “Bowls of Caring,” a virtual online auction will be held between March 28 and April 10. Different themed baskets will be available for auction, including Easter baskets and date-night baskets.

Those interested in booking a painting party may contact the YWCA Sweetwater County through their Facebook page, or by calling the office at 307-352-6635.
