July 24, 2021 — The above photo was take Friday night outside of the offices of the National Weather Service in Riverton, Wyoming. It appears orange due to the smoke from the wildfires to the west.

According to a post on their Facebook page, this full moon is called the “Buck Moon.” It gets this name since the antlers of male deer (a.k.a. Bucks) are in full growth mode at this time. But there is another name for this moon the weather service likes better, the “Thunder Moon,” because coverage of thunderstorms usually peaks this time of year.
