LARAMIE, WYOMING (July 26, 2021) – With talks about Oklahoma University and University of Texas leaving the Big 12 Conference gaining steam, Mountain Western Conference commissioner Craig Thompson gave very little insight as to what might happen in terms of potential conference realignment.
At 9:15 a.m. on Monday, July 26, Wyo4News reached out to the conference to request an interview with Thompson or to provide a statement as to what the board of directors’ plan was moving forward.
Hours later, Thompson released a statement to the media and Mountain West Conference fans, saying that they will “work confidentially and only comment further as appropriate or necessary.
“The Mountain West immediately engaged when we became aware of the potential for conference realignment. That has included gathering information over the past few days from across the industry, and earlier today our Board of Directors and Directors of Athletics convened to evaluate that intelligence and discuss next steps,” Thompson stated.
“Our intent is to actively appraise various scenarios, identify potential opportunities and take actions which can positively impact the trajectory of the Conference and our member institutions. We will do our work confidentially and only comment further as appropriate or necessary.”
