January 20, 2022 — Playing without their leading scorer and one other starter, the Wyoming Cowboys still prevailed with an 84-69 home win over San Jose State Wednesday night in Laramie. The Wyoming Cowgirls were not as fortunate, falling 70-59 at Boise State.
Cowboys vs. San Jose State
Without the services of forward Graham Ike, the Wyoming Cowboys still got past San Jose State Spartans, 84-69. Ike did not play in the game, deciding to rest a tender knee that he banged on the floor Monday’s road win at Nevada. The Cowboys were also without the services of starter Xavier DuSell and top reserve Kenny Foster.
“That was a gutsy effort,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “We knew we were coming off the same situation that San Jose State was. We were playing our third game in six days, where we didn’t have time to practice much in between games. This was a hard game, and then with Graham (Ike) not playing, guys had to adjust. We said no excuses.”
Wyoming led 45-37 at the first-half break, but the Spartans would tie the game at 55-55 with 12:32 to play in regulation. UW would then proceed to outscore the Spartans 28-14 in the final 11:40 of the contest to remain undefeated in the Mountain West at 3-0 and improve to 14-2 overall. Fresno State is now 0-4 in conference and 7-9 on the season.
Hunter Maldonado led the Pokes with 20 points and 12 assists, with Drake Jeffries and Brendan Wenzel each adding 15 points.
Wyoming is off tonight and Friday but will host Nex Mexico on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. It is hoped that Ike, DuSell, and Foster will be available to play for the Cowboys. Broadcast time will be at 5 p.m. on WyoRadio’s 99.7 JACK-FM and 99KSIT.com.
Cowgirls vs. Boise State
A poor offensive performance in the fourth quarter doomed the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team Wednesday night at Boise State. The Cowgirls fell, 70-59, in a game they led for much of the way in the first three quarters. Boise State outscored UW by 17 points (28-11) in the fourth quarter after the Cowgirls led by six after three-quarters of play.
UW was led by McKinely Bradshaw’s third consecutive 20-plus-point effort as she scored 22 points. Grace Ellis, Allyson Fertig, and Quinn Weidemann all had 11 points in the loss.
Wyoming falls to 2-3 in Mountain West play and 6-8 on the year. Bosie State improves to 2-4 in conference and 6-11 overall. The Cowgirls will be at Utah State (0-7, 5-12) on Saturday. Broadcast time is 1:30 p.m. with the tip-off at 2 p.m. on WyoRadio’s 1360/103.5 KRKK and 1360KRKK.com.
