October 27, 2021 — Due to rising costs and revenues resembling 2004 levels, a one-percent general-purpose sales tax has long been a discussion among Sweetwater County government entities. Revenue decreases and impacts of COVID-19 created a need to fund ambulances in the area — but not only ambulances.

The Public Safety/Economic Development Initiative received the required support from the County’s governing bodies in order to be on the November 2nd ballot. The resolution and the ballot question say that revenues from the tax will help fund public safety organizations and economic development.

According to a fact sheet shared with Wyo4News by Green River City Administrator, Reed Clevenger, public safety includes ambulances, fire, police, sheriff, the Joint Command Communication Center and dispatch, animal control, detention services and network services.

The previous one-percent sales and use tax in Sweetwater County occurred in 2018.

“Of course, Wyoming has one of the lowest various tax rates in the area,” City of Green River Public Affairs and Account Manager, Ryan Rust, said. “Tax in general for public safety services is a big issue across the state and country.”

Getting a tax increase on a ballot requires the approval of the County Commissioners and at least one-half of the municipalities’ governing bodies. Rock Springs did not pass the resolution, but enough of the other cities and towns in Sweetwater County did.

There are things that will not see a sales tax increase, including groceries purchased with food stamps, prescription medications, and most medical supplies.

If it passes, all Sweetwater County communities will receive the revenue.
