Summer is fast approaching and at the library, we’re ready for it! Summer is the busiest time in our libraries, and that’s because of the Summer Reading Challenge and all of the programs that go along with it.

If you are unfamiliar with the Summer Reading Challenge, it’s a program designed to keep children reading and learning throughout the summer when they are not in school. Being out of school can cause a learning loss for kids, meaning they may not retain learning from one year to the other. The Summer Reading Challenge is designed to help prevent some of this “summer slide.”

The program is simple. Kids read throughout the summer, log their time spent reading, and win prizes. This year we have improved the program a bit because we have introduced online tracking. Instead of keeping track of paper reading logs, participants can track their reading time online and through a mobile app. Along with online tracking, the online program has a bunch of fun learning challenges that will give participants the opportunity to win more tickets into our prize basket drawings at the end of the summer. To pre-register for the summer reading challenge, visit our website at www.sweetwaterlibraries.com and click “read more” on the summer reading challenge banner at the top of the page. We have a program for all ages – even one for adults! The program begins May 28.

While reading is a big part of our summer challenge, I really like the activities that go along with it. Kids learn in many ways, and when it’s fun it’s even better! This year, the theme of summer reading is A Universe of Stories, so we are providing many “Universe”-themed events. We are also bringing in a magician, a sword fighting duo, a puppet show, a polka party, a ukulele dance party, and a science show. Check out our full listing of summer programs by picking up an Event Guide at the Rock Springs Library or White Mountain Library in Rock Springs, or the Sweetwater County Library in Green River, or by visiting our website https://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com/web_admin/uploads/eventGuide.pdf.

We hope to see you at the libraries this summer!
