ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – The Bureau of Land Management Rock Springs Field Office recently teamed up with the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education group to improve the Sweetwater Guard Station Campground, located roughly 45 miles northeast of Farson, in the Wind River Mountain Range. Community partnerships like the CORE collaboration are an essential component of the BLM’s mission to practice shared conservation stewardship on BLM administered lands.
Consisting of eight- to 18-year-old youths and four staff members, the CORE crew spent five days removing and replacing 24 wooden boundary bollards, which were damaged over time by vandalism or the elements. The youth volunteers also cleared the walk-in camping site at the Sweetwater Guard Station, removing fallen dead trees with the use of two-man bucksaws. After the event, each youth received a crosscut section of wood with the BLM logo burnt into it.
At the end of the day, the crew enjoyed education components, which included lessons from CORE Coordinator Vic Orr on Leave No Trace principals, as well as a Police K9 demonstration provided by a BLM ranger and a police dog named Haras.
