Southwest Regional Science Fair Winners Announced

Rock Spring, WY (2/9/19) – Western Wyoming Community College has announced the winner of a recently held Southwest Regional Science Fair. The Fair was held on Thursday, January 24th for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students, grades six through 12.

In all, 79 registered participants showed 59 projects from four area schools, Big Piney Middle School, Kemmerer Junior High School, Pinedale Middle School, and Star Valley Middle School. 

Fourteen judges reviewed 10 of the 12 Categories available. The Overall Winner was Nicolas Smith-Curill from Pinedale Middle School with his “Waste Not Want Not” project.

According to Western Wyoming Community College “The Fair is an opportunity for students to apply their STEM knowledge, engage in scientific thought, and gain new ideas and knowledge from peers and educators”.

The Regional Science Fair is an affiliate of Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. The categories, divisions, rules and judging criteria of the Fair are in line with the Intel ISEF requirements.

This marked the third year of a five year agreement TATA Chemicals North America sponsored the event. In addition to their sponsorship, TATA issued a $500.00 check to the school of the overall winner to be used for promoting the STEM program at their educational facility.  Young and Professionals (YAP) group also provided $500.00 in cash awards the last two years.
