Cowgirl basketball team to hold an open practice in Rock Springs

Sept. 24, 2021 — It will be a coaching homecoming for Gerald Mattinson on Saturday, Oct. 9, when his Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will hold an open practice at Western Wyoming Community College (Western) in Rock Springs. Mattinson coached at Western from 1987 to 1999. He also coached at Rock Springs High School from 1982 to 1987.

The Cowgirl practice is open to the public with free admission. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., with the practice session scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. After the session, the Cowgirls will have autographed posters available to fans.

Mattinson will be starting his third season at the helm of the Cowgirls after spending 16 seasons as an assistant coach for the now-retired Joe Legerski. Mattinson has compiled a 31-22 record highlighted by last season’s first-ever Mountain West Tournament Championship in his first two seasons at the helm. Last season also included the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Cowgirls will officially open practice this coming Tuesday, Sept. 28, with their first exhibition game on Oct. 29 against Colorado Christian in Laramie. The regular season begins Nov. 9, with Mountain West Conference play starting Dec. 28.
